Summer is over. We’re overnighting at Sebago Lake State Park in western Maine, next to a beautiful beach that deserves more time than we’re going to give it. We watched a few big rigs struggle to park this afternoon, thankful again for our compact setup.

It feels a little strange having so many campers around us again, so I’m taking a couple of minutes refuge on the empty beach. Loon calls echo over the water. A pontoon boat is slowly chugging home, its red and green navigation lamps shining softly. Occasional snatches of conversation drift from the other campsites. The temps are falling and the humidity is low. I think we’ll sleep well tonight.
